When on June 24, 1622, on St. John the Baptist’s day, the Jesuit priest Ro fired a cannon shot and accurately hit a cart loaded with gunpowder belonging to the invading Dutch troops, the story that gave rise to this day began. From Macau: Eight hundred Dutch soldiers landed on Casillas Beach, which today is the reservoir area, to try to capture Macau. Sixty Europeans and ninety Macanese had to retreat from the Casillas Sands due to their numerical superiority. The bells rang persistently, the ladies took refuge in Sao Paulo, and the treasures were stored in the seminary. The city was unprotected in the Name of the Lord. Most of the Portuguese went abroad, which was common at that time of the year. The Dutch, fortunately, did not know this.
Moving cautiously forward, they came under heavy fire from the cannons of the Monte citadel, and the shot of the Jesuit priest Ro hit directly into the wagon with gunpowder. This confused the invading forces. They then climbed to the top of Ermida da Gaia, where they were detained by forces led by Rodrigo Ferreira. The last blow to the Dutch was inflicted by two combat groups from Macau, who attacked them as they were heading for another height. In their panic, the Dutch were still being attacked by the local population. In the final battle of Casillas, the Dutch, defeated, rushed into the sea, trying to reach the boats. Many of them drowned, and one of the overcrowded boats sank. Portuguese reports say that about 350 Dutch people died in battle or drowned. For the unprepared Macau, the victory was perceived as a miracle. After the end of the fighting, everyone went to the cathedral for a solemn thanksgiving, and the Senate and residents vowed to continue celebrating this day, when the salvation of the city was attributed to St. John the Baptist. Until 1999, this day was a public holiday in Macau. Macau remains Macau, but its day is no longer remembered….
