

Macau Government House
From Barra Square, stroll along the Praia Grande with its shady trees, artificial ponds and the Macau Tower. Along the way you will see a number of historical buildings. For example, the former governor’s residence, elegant private villas, the Portuguese Consul’s residence (formerly the Bela Vista Hotel), Ritchie College and the Macau Government Building with a beautiful neoclassical facade.
ANTÓNIO ALEXANDRINO DE MELO, BARON OF CERCAL (1837–1885)
His family owned the Praia Grande Palace (Macau Government Palace)
His father Alexandrino António de Melo built the building and leased it to the government in 1875 for a MOP of $24,000 per year.
In 1840, he founded a travel agency, selling tickets for steamships from Hong Kong around the world.
