Guia Lighthouse Macau

Guia Lighthouse Macau

Guia Lighthouse Macau Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台東望洋燈塔
The fortress was founded in 1622-1638. Inside is the Guillaume Chapel, built by the nuns of the Order of St. Clare, who lived here before the establishment of the convent of St. Clare. The remarkable frescoes of this chapel are dedicated to Western and Chinese religious and mythological subjects, which perfectly illustrate the spiritual life of the multinational Macau. The Guiya Lighthouse, built in 1865, is also located on the territory of the fortress, and is the first lighthouse on the Chinese coast. The lighthouse’s original paraffin lamp operated until 1910.
The height is 13.5 meters. In clear weather, the lighthouse strikes at a distance of 20 miles around.
Currently, the lighthouse is used to collect wind data and to warn about typhoons, which are frequent in Macau. In July 2023, after a very long time, it is finally possible to climb inside the lighthouse itself again!
The Guya fortress, along with the chapel and the lighthouse, symbolizes the past of maritime trade, military exploits and missionary activity.
If you want to climb the hill of Guillaume, but you are too lazy to climb up, then you can use the funicular, which is located at the entrance to the Flower Garden on Avenida Sidonio Pais. It only takes 80 seconds, and you will have a wonderful view of the garden, which houses a poultry house, a small zoo and an interesting collection of indoor plants.

Where is it located? See the map below
