Walk down the bridge from the square to Rua Central Street (at one time it was the commercial center of the city), where you will find a number of shops and the St. Lawrence Church. This is probably one of the richest and most beautiful churches in Macau, not only because of its decorations, but also because of the exhibits on display here. The old church was built of wood, and the modern one appeared in the first quarter of the 19th century.
The church was built by the Jesuits in the middle of the 16th century, and is one of the three oldest buildings in the city.
It acquired its modern form in 1846. Located on the southern shore, facing the sea, it became a place where the families of Portuguese sailors gathered on its front steps to pray for the safe return of their husbands. This is where another name of the church comes from – Feng Shun Tang (Hall of the Fair Wind). The area around this church was once very rich, which explains the scale and beauty of the decorations of this building. It is made in neoclassical style with Baroque elements.
From the church, walk along the picturesque Rua do Padre Antonio and Rua da Barra streets, and you will find yourself in the ancient square of Lilau, where ancient buildings are located around a small square with old banana trees and a fountain. There is a belief that everyone who drank water from this fountain will definitely return to Macau. Facing the square is the “Mandarin’s House” (the house museum of the Chinese grandee’s family).
