The Ruins Of St. Paul’s Cathedral Macau 大三巴牌坊
This church was built in the early 17th century according to the plan of an Italian Jesuit with the assistance of Japanese Christians who fled persecution in their homeland.
The cathedral was built by the Jesuits in 1638 and was the largest Christian church in East Asia. It stood for two hundred years and once burned down. There is only one facade left. And it is the facade that serves as the hallmark of Macau.
It was originally the Church of Our Lady, built in 1602-1640 and destroyed by fire in 1835. There are also ruins of St. Paul’s College, which was next to the Church. Today, the facade of the Ruins of St. Paul performs the symbolic function of the city altar. The facade is a perfect illustration of the history of Christianity in Asia – on its surface are carved quotations from the Bible in Chinese, Japanese chrysanthemums and bronze statues of holy missionaries.
The Museum of Religious Art is located in the basement of the church. It contains silver altarpieces, gilded statues, and 17th-century paintings depicting the crucified martyrs of Nagasaki and Archangel Michael in the guise of a samurai.

Museum of Sacred Art: 9:00 – 18:00 daily (except Tuesdays), closed to the public after 17:30. (Tuesday: open until 14:00. On public holidays, the mode is normal).
