There are ten higher education institutions in Macau, four of them are private. Teaching is conducted according to the British, Chinese, or Portuguese higher education system, which has no own in Macau.

1. University of Macau
The University of Macau used to be called the University of East Asia. Opened in 1981, it became the first higher education institution in Macau. Today, the university maintains close relations with Chinese and foreign universities, jointly developing and conducting research projects in various fields. During the university’s existence, hundreds of articles have been published in world-class international journals.
In addition to its main educational activities, the university provides research, development, and consulting services in the fields of education, economics, business and trade, public policy, science, and technology.
Within the university, lectures are conducted mainly in Chinese and English, but Portuguese and Japanese are used in some faculties and curricula. Since 2000, the number of students at the University of Macau has doubled.
