Macau is a port city on the southern coast of China, a Portuguese trading center in the Far East of the 17th century.
Players will have to get into the skins of energetic adventurers testing their luck in Macau. It doesn’t matter what role each of them tries on (captain or governor, craftsman or scientist), the most savvy, skilfully managing the various actions available to the players, and the most “respected” at the end of the game will win.
The game is a multifaceted Euro strategy from the inimitable Stefan Feld, where you try to earn as many Prestige points as possible. But how this can be done is up to you to decide — there are plenty of opportunities to achieve fame in this trading capital.
The game goes for 12 rounds, first we choose our cards and make plans, then we roll the dice and start getting “resources” to fulfill these plans, and finally we activate the cards, use the capabilities of those already activated, purchase goods, prestige and initiative (only once per turn) and sail the ocean on our own ships. It would seem that everything is simple, but the main problem is that there are not enough “resources” for all these actions and you constantly have to make difficult choices about what is most important in this move. At the same time, the game punishes players who do not have resources or do not activate cards for a very long time with a three-point penalty at the end of the game. It is almost impossible to complete the game without penalties, so it is better to just try to minimize them.
Since the allocation of resources depends entirely on the roll of the dice, at first glance, there is a feeling that it is impossible to plan at least something in this game. In fact, after three or four games, it becomes clear that planning takes place – “jokers” come to the rescue, giving a cube of the right color, special cards that reduce the cost of activation or allow you to activate cards for money, and, of course, do not forget that after the sixth round more and more values are replaced. per unit, which also brings us such a long-awaited cube of the color we need.
The young captain was rushing off into the distance on all sails, hurrying to be the first to pass through European ports in order to sell unfamiliar goods at the highest price. His elderly colleague was no longer ready for such speeds, but he didn’t really care, he had already bought up all the tea and was now only waiting for a lucrative contract to sell it at double the price in London. The third captain sold his ship altogether, and with the proceeds he opened a pub and even found a good innkeeper for him, the city is a port city, there are many sailors — the profit itself goes into the hands, and only then you can gradually achieve the desired position in the city for bribes. What am I talking about? Besides, there are plenty of ways to achieve victory in this game, and everyone is free to choose their own. Although an experienced player knows that it is better to combine all this wisely. So, we can get victory points in as many as five different ways.:
Of course, it is possible to sell goods in cities — Macau is, after all, a trading city – and this method is one of the main and most reliable. At the same time, the earlier you arrive at the port, the more expensive you will be able to sell the corresponding product: each port accepts only one type of product, and the price for the first batch is as much as five points, while the last third batch is estimated at only two points.
We can buy prestige points: each turn sets its own course for acquiring victory points for gold — it depends on which cards the players got to choose at the beginning of the round. What is noteworthy is that sometimes you can buy a few points for a little money, and sometimes this amount reaches great heights and for one purchase you can dramatically get ahead by paying all your gold for it. It is important that you can only buy points in this way once per turn, so the “rich pinocchio” will not be able to get ahead with a small number of points for sale.
Prestige points are earned by activated action cards, most often one per turn for each such card, if certain conditions are met, for example, there are no goods in your hold, you are in the lead on your own initiative or for using your other cards, to name just a few.
Some activated cards earn us points at the end of the game, and there are also a variety of conditions that help you increase your prestige.
Finally, at the end of the game, you will receive two points for each block in your largest area in the market.
