The Foundation building was built in 1770. It originally served as the residence of the wealthy Portuguese merchant Manuel Pereira. It was later rented by the East India Company. Today, the building is the headquarters of the Oriental Foundation.
The estate is in neoclassical style, which today is called the “mansion garden”. It was so named by officers from the British East India Company, who used the mansion as their headquarters when conducting trade with China. Today it houses the headquarters of the Oriental Foundation mission, a gallery with works of art and sculpture, as well as a small ceremony hall. Next door is the old Protestant cemetery, where some of the city’s most famous residents are buried. The most famous of them is George Chinney, whose paintings depicting the Chinese coast are housed in the Museum of Art of the Cultural Center.
