This preserved section of the city wall, built in early 1569, is a remnant of the early Portuguese tradition of building defensive walls around their settlements, which they also built in Africa and India. In Macau, the construction of this wall used local chunambo building material, a mixture of clay,
earth, sand, rice straw, broken stones and oyster shells laid out in layers.
