The groundwater under this square once served as the only source of water for the whole of Macau. The famous Portuguese phrase: “Whoever drinks from the waters of Lilau will never forget Macau” reflects their nostalgia for this square. This
was once the area of residence of the first Portuguese settlers in Macau.
